KOTA KINABALU – The coronavirus has “no love or mercy” on Valentine’s Day, said Sabah minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun as the state logs another 4,035 daily cases, a spike of 144 compared with yesterday.

Masidi, who is also Sabah Covid-19 spokesman, said symptomatic cases has risen to 61.07% as he warned of more infections in the future.

“Some 68.2% of Kota Kinabalu’s 914 cases are symptomatic and 518 children below the age of 11 are infected.”

He added that the majority of today’s cases (99.74%) are in Categories 1 and 2, while Categories 3 and 4 each have four cases, and two patients are in Category 5.

Masidi said the continuous high number of cases had been expected given the high sporadic infections.

The districts recording the highest number of infections are in Kota Kinabalu (910 cases), Sandakan (496 cases), Tuaran (388 cases), Tawau (328 cases), Penampang (325 cases), Papar (263 cases), Putatan (200 cases), Lahad Datu (189 cases), Beaufort (132 cases), Ranau (129 cases), Keningau (106 cases) and Kota Belud (106 cases).

Low take-up for child vaccination

Masidi also said only 9,686 or 2.35% from the 411,400 children eligible for vaccination took their shots as of last night.

Child vaccination started on February 5.

“The numbers are very low, taking the risk of infections very high involving children under the age of 11 every day.

“Today, 272 new patients involved children aged between 5 and 11 who were already eligible for vaccination.

“We urge parents to take the initiative to ensure their children are vaccinated so they can be given the maximum protection against infection,” he said. – The Vibes, February 14, 2022
