KUALA LUMPUR – Ukraine continues to receive more support from other countries as Russian forces continue their assault into the former Soviet state’s territory.

A crowd of more than 50 official representatives from about 30 nations around the globe including officials from Italy, Germany, Korea, Norway, the United Kingdom and the United States were present here today to offer support to the embattled country.

Speaking at a gathering organised by the Ukrainian embassy here today, ambassador Olexander Nechytaylo said that despite their violent persistence, Russian forces have failed to break the spirits of Ukrainians.

“They (Russia) expected the world to just watch in disbelief a public execution of Ukrainians for their commitment to democracy.

“The international community, however, has responded with unprecedented unity and determination, with Russia already having lost access to the international financial markets while being increasingly isolated in their ability to travel and compete in sports.

“Ukraine, meanwhile, is receiving some of the vital support that we need to defeat the aggressor and liberate our country,” he said.

“We are bleeding, but we are fighting back with even more resolve,” he said.

Nechytaylo also expressed his gratitude towards nations that have continued to support Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, particularly those that have provided defence equipment, medical supplies, and refuge to Ukrainians.

He added, however, that those who have refrained from getting involved in the matter will one day have to answer for their inaction.

“The world will remember those who are choosing to remain silent or turning a blind eye to the criminal act that is causing a new humanitarian and security crisis of a global magnitude,” he warned.

Claiming that the invasion of Ukraine marks “the beginning of the end of Putin’s Russia,” Nechytaylo expressed his belief that in the face of strong opposition, Russian forces are falling back on inhumane tactics to push forward.

“Facing fierce resistance, the enemy is losing motivation and is resorting to tactics of indiscriminate mass attacks against the civilian population.

“All these crimes are being carefully documented for further legal proceedings in the International Criminal Court,” he said, adding that as of now almost 400 Ukrainian civilians, including 16 children, have been killed.

According to NBC News, the International Criminal Court will be opening an investigation into whether Russia has committed war crimes and crimes against humanity in Ukraine.

This comes hours after the second round of peace talks in Belarus ended without a clear resolution amid continued Russian attacks on residential areas in Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city.

Commenting on the third round of discussions, which were ongoing at the time of the gathering, Nechytaylo said that he is “very sceptical” about Russia’s commitment to negotiate towards an agreeable settlement.

Similarly, United States ambassador to Malaysia Brian McFeeters told media that while he hopes discussions will bring about a peaceful resolution, he is wary of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s sincerity.

“Putin has carried out false diplomacy measures before, so we are worried about that,” he said, adding that the US and other nations are putting in place strong financial sanctions that will continue to be strengthened until Putin ceases his invasion of Ukraine. – The Vibes, March 1, 2022
