KUALA LUMPUR – By August, the DAP election machinery must be prepared for a general election, party secretary-general Anthony Loke Siew Fook said.
The decision was made during a meeting involving DAP’s newly elected central executive committee and MPs, which focused on the party’s direction and preparations ahead of the polls.
While there has not been any confirmation on the polling date, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s party Umno has been pushing for an early election.
The political memorandum of understanding between Pakatan Harapan and the government also agreed that a general election can be called after July 31 this year.
Loke said that DAP leadership also notes that among PH’s main conditions under the MoU is for an anti-hopping law to be enacted prior to the federal polls.
“The party will be giving its full support to (national deputy chairman) Gobind Singh Deo to represent DAP’s stand in the special select committee formed by Parliament yesterday to ensure the anti-hopping agenda can be passed by May.”
Law minister Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar had announced yesterday the formation of the committee, which he will chair, tasked with scrutinising constitutional amendments and definitions needed to introduce any anti-hopping legislation.
Loke said today’s meeting in Subang Jaya also saw the tabling of an analysis of the party’s performance in Johor, which is aimed at providing a better understanding to leaders on the voting pattern involving seats contested by DAP.
“We accept the fact that there was a significant decrease in the percentage of support for PH. Although DAP managed to defend 10 seats, the percentage of vote was lower.
“Based on this voting pattern in Johor, today’s meeting will deliberate and identify specific action plans for the next four months.” – The Vibes, April 12, 2022
