KOTA KINABALU – Warisan information chief Datuk Awang Ahmad Sah today demanded answers from the Sabah state government regarding the status of the proposed identity card for undocumented migrants living in the state.
He said there have not been any updates on the proposal since February, when Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said that negotiations between the state government and federal Home Ministry have yet to be finalised.
“I…want to know the stand of the Sabah government whether they reject or support the issuance of the foreigner card,” Awang Ahmad said.
Awang Ahmad also asked the state government how much longer it will take to complete its investigation into an alleged “Project IC” participant who is now a member of the board of directors of state palm oil firm Sawit Kinabalu.
Sabah politicians have long railed about allegations of instant citizenship granted to undocumented migrants in the state in the 1990s, to bolster votes for the Barisan Nasional (BN) ruling federal coalition led at the time by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad during his first tenure as prime minister.
“The PBS president Datuk Seri Maximus Ongkili himself raised the issue and Hajiji has promised to probe into the issue. It’s been two months and still no action has been taken,” Awang Ahmad said.
