KOTA KINABALU – Over five villages in the Kota Belud district have been disconnected from the town when a bridge in Kg Nahaba collapsed due to a flood today.
Usukan assemblyman Datuk Seri Salleh Keruak said he had learned about the situation and had informed the matter to the local authority in hopes of fast action.
“What is important is that safety (of the people) is a priority,” the former Sabah chief minister said in a Facebook post today.
According to unofficial information shared by villagers on Facebook, the villages include Kg Nahaba, Kg Togudon, Kg Tolungan, Kg Torintidon, and Kg Sayap.
Since last year, Kota Belud, about 57 km from Kota Kinabalu, has been hit by heavy floods several times, with the last one happening early last month.
Meanwhile, a total of 1,435 victims from 554 families in Beaufort and Tenom have been evacuated from their homes following flash floods in both these districts after heavy downpours since last Tuesday.
The Civil Defence Force reported that 13 temporary relief centres have been activated in Tenom and Beaufort since, but victims in two centres – the Mandalom Lama Cultural Hall and Makakagas Cultural Home in Tenom – have returned home after the floods in their areas receded.
As of 4pm today, 56 villages in Beaufort and 22 villages in Tenom are still flooded.
Netizens also reported flooding in Lok Kawi and Kinarut in Papar, as well as in Keningau, Tenom, and Beaufort.
