KOTA KINABALU – A 10-year-old girl, Elzanatira Asod, drowned while crossing a river with her mother at Kg Melangkap Darat in Kota Marudu at 4pm yesterday.

The Fire and Rescue Department was deployed to the scene after receiving a distress call around 6pm yesterday.

The victim was swept away after a sudden gush of river water, it added.

A search and rescue operation was organised the same evening involving police, civil defence personnel, volunteer corps personnel and some 30 villagers, but was called off late last night.

“The girl’s pants were found 2km away from where she was last seen during the search operations today,” said the department.

“The victim’s body was later found by villagers, along with officers from other government agencies at 11.15am, some seven kilometres from where she was last seen.” – The Vibes, May 14, 2022
