MIRI – Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) will be eyeing seven Chinese-majority parliamentary constituencies in the looming general election (GE15) as well as fielding new faces.
At the party’s headquarters in Kuching to celebrate its 63rd anniversary, SUPP president Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian said it will contest in Bandar Kuching, Stampin, Sibu, Sarikei, Miri, Lanang, and Serian.
He added that the party will not propose its assemblymen for parliamentary seats.
“We have many capable young candidates with good leadership qualities. The duties and responsibilities of an assemblyman and parliamentary rep are very heavy.”
He said SUPP expects an early GE15, as early as July, citing a volatile national political scene.
SUPP currently holds Serian via Datuk Richard Riot, who is also Malaysia’s special envoy to East Asia.
The other six seats that SUPP is eyeing are held by opposition parties.
Of the 31 parliamentary seats, ruling state coalition Gabungan Parti Sarawak holds 18, two with independents and the rest by opposition parties DAP, PKR, and Parti Sarawak Bersatu. – The Vibes, June 4, 2022
