KUALA LUMPUR – Johor Crown Prince Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim has been appointed the state regent effective immediately.
The announcement was made by Sultan of Johor Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar after he officiated the second meeting of the first session of Johor’s 15th assembly at Bangunan Sultan Ismail in Johor Baru here today.
“The Johor crown prince has been appointed as the regent of Johor beginning today. I would like to take a short break,” he was quoted as saying in his decree by Harian Metro.
Tunku Ismail, the eldest child of Sultan Ibrahim and his consort, Permaisuri Johor Raja Zarith Sofiah Sultan Idris Shah, was previously appointed as Raja Muda Johor in April 2006 before being made the crown prince in January 2010.
His appointment comes just a week after he announced on June 9 that he would take a step back from Johor Darul Ta’zim FC (JDT) and leave the day-to-day operations of the club to its top management.
In a post on the team’s social media account, Tunku Ismail had said that he came to the decision due to other responsibilities and commitments.
He remains the owner and majority shareholder of JDT.
A regent is an individual appointed to oversee the ruling of a state, given the full power of a monarch in the latter’s absence or if the ruler is a minor or incapacitated. – The Vibes, June 16, 2022
