TAWAU – The Sabah Royal Malaysian Customs Department foiled an attempt to smuggle drugs worth RM750,000 in Tawau and Keningau using express buses and courier services. The attempt was busted in an operation conducted between June 8 and today.

Its assistant director-general, Julaimin Soimin said in the special narcotics operation of the Malaysia-Indonesia border joint task force, five raids were held in Tawau and one in Keningau – in which the drugs were also believed to be heading to Tawau.

According to Julaimin, the seized drugs were syabu weighing 10.69kg with an estimated worth of RM366,878, and seven kg of ketamine worth RM385,000.

“The operation involved the Malaysian and Indonesian sea borders in Tawau, as well as air and land entrances. We are committed to tackling any activity involving drug smuggling in the state," he told a press conference here today.

Julaimin said since the beginning of this year and until now, 55.33kg of syabu worth RM1.992 million and 10kg of ketamine worth RM550,000 have been seized.

He urged the public to help combat the smuggling of cigarettes, liquor, drugs and vehicles because these activities were detrimental to the country as well as threatening the safety and well-being of the people.

He added that the public could channel any information related to smuggling activities to the Customs toll-free line at 1-800-88-8855 or the nearest Customs Office with the assurance that the identity of informants would be kept confidential. – Bernama, July 7, 2022
