KOTA KINABALU – The state Public Works Ministry has been taken to task over Sandakan’s continuous water supply disruption and the Water Department’s corruption scandal.

In the state assembly today, Calvin Chong (Elopura-Warisan) brought up the water supply issue in Sandakan that has persisted for the last 40 years.

“When I called the Sabah Water Department, they often say the water pumps have broken down.”

Sabah Assistant Public Works Minister Datuk Limus Jury said the Water Department will make a visit to the district.

He added that a written reply will be provided on whether the state will retrieve the hundreds of millions of ringgit confiscated by the authorities in the Water Department corruption scandal.

Citing the matter is still being tried in court, Limus in his response to Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal (Senallang-Warisan) said the ministry cannot directly reply to the question in respect of the courts.

Shafie had sought a response from the ministry on whether they would retrieve the funds to resolve Sabah’s long-standing water issues.

The Water Department corruption probe saw a total of RM114.5 million confiscated in a widespread investigation by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) from 2015 to 2016.

Shafie was also linked to the corruption scandal and also remanded by the MACC over the corruption scandal. – The Vibes, July 18, 2022
