KUALA LUMPUR – Bersatu will not be affected by Segamat lawmaker Datuk Seri Edmund Santhara Kumar’s exit from the party, said party secretary-general Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin.
Hamzah was quoted as saying by Sinar Harian that the future of the party is not determined by any MP.
He stressed that the struggles brought by party members are more important in determining the party’s direction.
“MPs sometimes only think of their own individual interests, whereas members are the ones who determine the party’s crusade and ideology.
“Everything that is done is for the future of the religion, race and country.
“It will not be something that could weaken the party simply because of the attitude of an individual who may only be fighting for himself,” he was quoted as saying by the Malay daily.
He was responding to reports that Santhara had quit Bersatu and had resigned as head of the party’s associate members’ wing.
According to reports by several news portals that cited sources, the Segamat MP did not see any future for non-Bumiputera lawmakers in the party led by former prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
Meanwhile, commenting on the selection of a new logo to be used in the looming general election, Hamzah said Perikatan Nasional (PN) will be holding a meeting on the issue in the near future.
He said the coalition had engaged several companies to create designs for PN to deliberate on and will reach a decision in the upcoming meeting.
Previously, Muhyiddin, who is also PN chairman, was reported to have said that a new logo will be introduced for use in the 15th general election following suggestions by the coalition’s supreme council for it to modify its logo. – The Vibes, July 23, 2022
