PADANG BESAR – The General Operation Force (GOF) returned fire when two of its personnel were shot by two groups of smugglers at the Malaysia-Thailand border here this morning, said sources.
The Vibes was told that Corporal Baharuddin Ramli had been conducting intelligence work around 3am when they stumbled upon movement in the area.
Several shots then rang out, including ones that fatally hit Baharuddin and severely wounded Corporal Norihan Tari, added sources.
Nearby GOF members returned fire, but the perpetrators had managed to slip back into Thailand under the cover of darkness.
It is said that the elite police commando unit members, who were immediately deployed to enhance security checks, have discovered one of the wounded suspects in the area while three more were supposedly nabbed by the Thai police at a hospital in Haadyai, Songkhla.
It is learnt that a message was sent over WhatsApp to various groups that the suspects have been nabbed after the incident.
The Vibes has yet to confirm these messages.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador is now at the scene of this morning’s shooting and will update the media on the incident later.
He is inspecting the scene and will be visiting the injured officer, who is undergoing treatment at Tuanku Fauziah Hospital in Kangar.
The top cop also expressed his condolences to the family of the dead officer.
