KUALA LUMPUR – Umno has set September 30 as the new date for its Supreme Council to meet after the prime minister confirmed on Wednesday night that it has been postponed.

In a brief statement, Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan said the meeting will be on September 30, 8pm and will include all Supreme Council members.

He attributed the new date to prime minister and party vice-president Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s Sukma event in Bangi tomorrow.

Ahmad said Umno leaders are also invited to Barisan Nasional Youth’s election machinery launch tomorrow at 2pm at Titiwangsa Stadium here.

It was reported on Wednesday that the initial meeting was for Ismail Sabri to meet the top leaders of Umno tomorrow to discuss the date for the 15th general election.

The prime minister said he was waiting for a new date for the meeting.

Umno’s top five leaders are president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, and vice-presidents Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid, and Ismail Sabri himself.

This follows Ismail Sabri having stated on Tuesday that the party’s top five leaders are expected to discuss the date for the upcoming polls.

He had said there was a window to hold the election this year and a discussion among the party’s top five leaders could be held as soon as possible or prior to the tabling of Budget 2023 on October 7.

Previously, Ismail Sabri had moved forward the budget tabling from October 28 to this date, which led to speculation that Parliament is likely to be dissolved soon after. – The Vibes, September 16, 2022
