KUALA LUMPUR – DAP’s Seputeh MP Teresa Kok has filed a notice of bankruptcy against Umno’s Datuk Seri Jamal Md Yunos after he allegedly failed to pay more than RM350,000 to her as directed by the high court for defamation.
In a statement today, Kok said that her lawyers at S.N. Nair & Partners filed the notice on her behalf upon Jamal’s failure to abide by the court decision arising out of her suit.
On July 26 this year, judicial commissioner Datuk Mohd Arief Emran Arifin had awarded RM300,000 in damages to Kok, after she won the defamation action over the alleged misuse of Yayasan Warisan Anak Selangor funds.
Jamal, who is Umno’s Sg Besar division leader, was also ordered to pay RM50,000 in costs.
Incidentally, Jamal, who is also the Selangor Barisan Nasional (BN) communications chief, was reported to have been taken to the hospital after collapsing at a programme he attended last night.
His son Amin Daniel told Utusan Malaysia that Jamal had been at a BN programme in Sg Besar where he suddenly collapsed.
Jamal is at Prince Court Medical Centre here.
“My father collapsed suddenly and I brought him to Prince Court myself,” Amin was quoted as saying.
In her statement, Kok said she filed her defamation suit against Jamal on April 6, 2017 as he had accused her of misappropriating RM2 million in funds from Yawas under the Selangor government.
She noted the damages and costs awarded to her on July 26.
“Until today, I still have not received any money for damages and costs from Jamal,” she said.
“The total amount of damages and cost of action together with the interest from the judgment, cumulatively from July 26, 2022 to August 30, 2022 amounts to RM 351,479.45,” she said.
“Therefore, I have ordered my lawyer at S.N. Nair & Partners to file the notice of bankruptcy on Jamal because of Jamal’s light and indifferent attitude.
“If Jamal still does not comply with the demands of the bankruptcy notice, bankruptcy proceedings will be conducted against him and he may be declared a bankrupt at the end of the trial,” she added. – The Vibes, September 18, 2022
