KUCHING – The Sarawak Modernisation of Agriculture and Regional Development Ministry has been renamed as the Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development Ministry with effect from today, said Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He said the renaming of the ministry helmed by Datuk Seri Stephen Rundi Utom was made as Sarawak is moving towards sustainable agriculture with the focus of not only producing food but embracing new farming technology as well.

“Sarawak is emphasising digital transformation in agriculture by providing land that will become agroparks, similar to industrial parks. This land will be subdivided so that the private sector can come in to start their food industry,” he said when speaking at the opening of the Congress on Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security 2022 here.

According to him, agroparks would be equipped with all the necessary infrastructure, including 5G digital facilities to enable farms to be monitored and managed via digital devices in real-time anywhere and anytime.

“Sarawak is also contributing to sustainability by producing hydrogen as the main green power to run machinery. By combining technology and green power, you can develop sustainable agriculture and food industries,” he added. – Bernama, September 21, 2022
