ALOR STAR – Kedah DAP is puzzled by the resignation of Umno Sg Tiang assemblyman Datuk Suraya Yaacob from her state executive councillor post here, days after Parliament was formally dissolved.

Its chairman Datuk Tan Kok Yew commented that the move does not dent the state’s PAS-Bersatu coalition government.

In Kedah, Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammed Sanusi Md Nor leads the state administration with the support of 14 from PAS, six from Bersatu, and two from Umno.

This gives Sanusi 23 seats, whereas the opposition led by Pejuang and Pakatan Harapan (PH) only has 13 from a total of 36 state seats in Kedah.

Suraya today announced her resignation as Kedah Public Works, Energy, Water Supply, and Resources Committee chairman with immediate effect.

In a Facebook post, she said: “I would like to express my deepest appreciation to Sultan of Kedah Al-Aminul Karim Sultan Sallehuddin Sultan Badlishah for his royal highness’ consent in appointing me to the position.

“My deepest appreciation also goes to the leadership of the Kedah government, all government departments and agencies, non-governmental organisations, individuals, and the people of Kedah,” said Suraya, who is a four-term elected representative.

Saying that PH has their work cut out for them, Tan added that he hopes partner party Amanah has regained some of its zeal as a PAS splinter party and is poised to take on their former comrades in what is shaping up to be another bruising battle.

In Kedah, the elections will see Kedah Amanah chairman Datuk Mahfuz Omar against Sanusi, one of his former proteges and current PAS elections director. –  The Vibes, October 13, 2022
