KOTA KINABALU – PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is expected to announce the party’s candidates for its allotted parliamentary seats in Sabah for the 15th general election (GE15) at the Pan Borneo Hotel Putatan near here at 4pm today.
With its coalition Pakatan Harapan (PH) set to contest in all 25 constituencies in the state, the seats are to be split between PKR, DAP, Upko and Amanah, and possibly with Muda as a partner.
Upko will be contesting five seats, and DAP seven, leaving the 13 other seats still unconfirmed. If Amanah and Muda contest in one seat each, PKR could possibly vie for 11 seats in Sabah with all its candidates to be revealed today.
PKR won three federal seats in the last general election. They were Tawau (Datuk Christina Liew), Putatan (Awang Husaini Sahari), and Ranau (Datuk Jonathan Yasin). However, Jonathan later quit the party and joined Bersatu.
This means that PKR may contest eight seats that are new to the party. These are likely to be among those that were under Warisan previously. This also means that the Warisan Plus pact is no more.
So far, Upko has announced that it will contest Penampang, Tuaran, Kimanis, Beluran, and Libaran, while DAP will be running in Tenom, Sandakan, Kota Kinabalu, and Batu Sapi. DAP’s three other seats within PH have yet to be announced.
GE15 in Sabah will see the battle among four strong forces – Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), Barisan Nasional (BN), Warisan and PH.
The GRS and BN coalitions are forming an alliance for the polls, while Sabah opposition party Warisan is contesting by itself in all 25 Sabah seats.
While there have been squabbles between GRS and BN fighting for several seats, component parties in Sabah PH appeared to have reached an agreement without much hassle, at least in the public eyes so far.
