MetMalaysia warns of thunderstorms along west coast

KUALA LUMPUR – The Meteorological Department has warned about thunderstorms along much of the west coast in Peninsular Malaysia.

In a weather warning issued at 4.30pm today, much of Penang, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Negri Sembilan, Melaka and Johor are expected to experience thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds until 9pm.

The department’s forecast also includes Kedah (Kota Setar, Yan, Kuala Muda, Kulim and Bandar Baharu), Perak (Kerian, Larut, Matang, Selama, Bagan Datuk, Hilir Perak, Batang Padang and Muallim) and Pahang (Pekan dan Rompin).

Thunderstorms are also expected to hit Labuan, Sarawak’s Miri, Marudi and Limbang, as well as Sabah’s Sipitang, Tenom, Kuala Penyu, Beaufort, Nabawan, Keningau and Papar.

Warnings are usually issued when there are signs of rain intensity of more than 20mm per hour or downpour of more than one hour.

Meanwhile, the Irrigation and Drainage Department issued a flash flood warning at 3pm today for areas in Selangor’s Klang, Kuala Langat, Kuala Selangor, Petaling and Sepang districts.

It issued similar caution for Johor’s Batu Pahat, Johor Baru, Pontian and Kota Tinggi, as well as areas in Kedah’s Kota Setar, Yan and Kuala Muda, Sabah’s Papar and Tuaran, and Dungun in Terengganu.

Flood victims evacuated to temporary shelters increased in Kelantan, Penang and Melaka, decreased in Kedah and Selangor, while remained unchanged in Johor. – The Vibes, November 12, 2022
