KUALA LUMPUR – After Barisan Nasional’s (BN) drab performance yesterday at the polls, Shahril Sufian Hamdan has called for “collective responsibility” in the face of failure.

While he resigned as Umno information chief, he urged BN chairman and party president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to “honourably” step back as well as setting an example.

In a statement today, Shahril said the 15th general election results is part of a “collective responsibility” of the party and not merely the fault of any individual but concurred with Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi.

Onn Hafiz, in a statement, called for Zahid to resign as party president with immediate effect, “just as Datuk Seri Najib Razak did in 2018”.

“I agree with the assessment by Johor Mentri Besar (Datuk Onn Hariz Ghazi), that is with respect, the Umno president and BN chairman must be a responsible leader and resign honourably.

“Let other party leaders and individuals decide the next critical step for their parties. l also resigned as party information chief in the spirit of collective responsibility.

“As with many others, I remained with the party. The struggle continues. This is not the end,” said Shahril.

BN had only managed to garner 30 parliamentary seats, a historic low for the coalition which once ruled the country for 60 years.

Shahril lost in Alor Gajah by an 890 majority to Pakatan Harapan candidate and former Melaka chief minister Adly Zahari, who garnered 28,178 votes. – The Vibes, November 20, 2022
