KUALA LUMPUR – Indonesian President Joko Widodo is the first world leader to congratulate Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on becoming the country’s 10th prime minister.

In a 15-minute call tonight, Jokowi, as he is popularly known, said he took the initiative to call Anwar after receiving word that the latter had been sworn in as prime minister.

Anwar meanwhile thanked Jokowi for the gesture and spoke of Malaysia and Indonesia as “brotherly nations”.

“We hope to enhance our bilateral relations through our shared culture and values, as well as through our respective economies,” Anwar told Jokowi.

Both Anwar and Jokowi came to power on similar campaigns for clean government, justice, and unity.

Anwar succeeds Bera MP and Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, whose Barisan Nasional coalition lost heavily in the recent election. Ismail Sabri is now officially the prime minister with the shortest stint in the post. – The Vibes, November 24, 2022
