KUALA LUMPUR – The Umno Supreme Council must continue to push the unity government that it is part of to resolve issues surrounding former attorney-general Tommy Thomas and other legal matters, said council member Datuk Mohd Puad Zakarshi.
These include allegations against Court of Appeal judge Datuk Seri Mohd Nazlan Ghazali, former Bank Negara governor Tan Sri Zeti Akhtar Aziz and also a fair trial for “bossku”, in reference to former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
Puad listed these issues when announcing that the Umno Supreme Council will be meeting tonight for its first meeting since the cabinet was formed, with party president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi appointed as deputy prime minister along with five others from Umno to the cabinet.
Umno-Barisan Nasional has six out of the cabinet’s current 28 ministers.
“The Umno Supreme Council must continue its role as driver, (providing) check and balance to the government. No compromise.
“The government must be urged to expedite the royal commission of inquiry (RCI) into Tommy Thomas and Tabung Haji, (investigations on the) allegations against judge Nazlan and Zeti, as well as (look into) a fair trial for ‘bossku’ and the Pulau Batu Putih issue,” Puad said on Facebook today.
He also said that the opposition, Perikatan Nasional (PN), must not object to investigations into alleged misappropriation of funds during the administration of its chairman, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
“PN must not object as this is in line with its tagline that PN is clean.
“It’s not a question of revenge or abuse of power. It’s not about ‘before, others got investigated, now it’s your turn to be investigated’. This is a fact, not sloganeering.”
Former attorney-general Thomas is facing a criminal investigation under several laws as ordered by former prime minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob for revelations made in his memoirs. Thomas has allegedly disclosed government secrets and made seditious statements, among others.
Meanwhile, the allegations against judge Nazlan pertained to an alleged conflict of interest and foreknowledge of issues related to Najib’s SRC International corruption trial, which Nazlan had presided over and found the former prime minister guilty of graft.
The claims against former central bank governor Zeti involve her husband’s alleged receipt of 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) funds through his company in Singapore, with the status of investigations unclear.
Muhyiddin, meanwhile, is likely to be investigated for the alleged misappropriation of RM600 billion in public funds during the Covid-19 emergency declared during his administration.
Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission chief Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed two days ago that investigation papers have been opened, while sources said Muhyiddin will be called in for questioning, as well as then-finance minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz and then health minister Khairy Jamaluddin. – The Vibes, December 8, 2022
