KUALA LUMPUR – The Transport Ministry has suspended the operating permit of a haulier company after one of its trucks caused an accident in Gerik, Perak, that resulted in a pregnant woman’s miscarriage.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke said he had instructed the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and Land Public Transport Agency (Apad) to take immediate action against the company and the truck driver.

The accident was caught on a dash cam video and showed a trailer cornering a bend at high-speed, causing goods to fly off its back and smash into an oncoming car. The incident also caused the car recording the video to overturn.

Loke in a Facebook post expressed his condolences to the family that had lost the baby, which was said to be just 34 weeks old.

“I will not compromise with drivers and companies that endanger people on the road,” the minister said.

Details about the miscarried baby and those injured in the accident were posted on a Facebook page of dash cam owners in Malaysia, according to Malay daily Kosmo.

A man said to be the child’s father said his wife suffered horrific injuries to her womb spine, ribs and skull, causing the unborn child’s death besides other severe complications.

“This is our first child, why did you have to snatch it away from us so cruelly,” the man said according to Kosmo.

The truck driver reportedly fled the scene but was eventually arrested at a roadblock in Jeli, Kelantan. – The Vibes, December 13, 2022
