SANDAKAN – Qualified contractors are needed to resolve the district’s rubbish collection woes, said Liberal Democratic Party leader Robert Chong, lauding the state government’s decision to allow only those with the Pukonsa A licence to apply for the job.

DAP elected representatives here have shown no interest in addressing the issue since it surfaced in April, he said, commenting on the criticism by the party’s Tg Papat assemblyman, Frankie Poon, of the licence requirement.

Chong said he highlighted the problem following the termination of the Sandakan Municipal Council’s (MPS) rubbish collection contractor on April 30, but the state administration then headed by Parti Warisan Sabah, which Poon was a part of, did nothing.

“Sandakan YBs had no interest in resolving this health hazard, but instead supported MPS president Wong Foo Tin on hiring trucks for rubbish collection rather than looking for a qualified contractor.”

He said former local government and housing assistant minister Hiew Vun Zin also did nothing to resolve the problem.

Chong added that he has raised the issue repeatedly after MPS’ decision not to continue employing the services of Alam Motivasi Sdn Bhd.

“The poor administration and handling of rubbish collection by the MPS president has caused anger and disappointment among the people.”

He expressed hope that a qualified and experienced contractor, and not an “Alibaba company”, will be appointed soon. – The Vibes, December 1, 2020
