KUALA LUMPUR – Just within 17 days of stepping into 2023, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has already received 444 complaints regarding online media.

Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil said MCMC has been organising programmes to prevent the spread of fake news, hate speech, and scam cases to provide a safe cyberspace for internet users in Malaysia.

He noted that based on research, 88.7% of Malaysians were internet users in 2020.

That same year, MCMC had launched the “MyCybergenius” programme as part of its Klik Dengan Bijak initiative to educate Internet users and facilitate data collection on internet use.

“Although the internet brings benefits and eases our work, it risks causing disruptions among the internet users that could threaten the peace and harmony of our country,” he said in his speech during an event commemorating the 10th anniversary of KDB at the MCMC headquarters in Cyberjaya today.

“MCMC launched the KDB programme in 2012 to educate and spread awareness of the safe usage of the Internet by stressing self-control, as stated in the Rukun Negara,” he added.

Modules on safe usage of the internet to prevent cyber crimes have been published under KDB for audiences in all age groups and backgrounds, together with exhibitions, campaigns, competitions, and forums.

KDB won first place in the Ethical Dimension of the Information Society category at the World Summit of Information Society (WSIS) in 2020. Malaysia has been shortlisted in the finals again this year at the WSIS 2023 in Geneva.

Fahmi expressed his hope that KDB will break records again this year and make Malaysia proud on the world stage. – The Vibes, January 17, 2023
