KOTA KINABALU – Some 15,000 food baskets will be distributed today to victims in flood-hit districts in Sabah, said state Community Development and People’s Well-being Minister Datuk James Ratib.

“I will be visiting the districts, starting with Kota Marudu today,” he said after an event at the Sabah International Convention Centre here today.

The number of evacuees in Sabah stood at 6,453 people as of 4pm – with 371 from Paitan district, Pitas (554), Kota Marudu (4,789), and Kudat (739).

Lahad Datu was also hit by floods but no evacuees were reported.

The Civil Defence Force in its daily briefing today noted 26 temporary evacuation centres were opened in the state four days ago.

So far, there have been no casualties.

Earlier, the state Disaster Management Committee secretariat in a statement said 11 relief centres were opened in Kota Marudu, three in Kudat, four in Pitas, and seven in Paitan.

It added that 153 people from 50 families who were previously evacuated to Rumah Ketua Kg Sinasak Batu and Surau Kg Sibuang were ordered to move to SK Pekan 2 due to the risk of being hit by floods. – The Vibes, January 26, 2023
