KUALA LUMPUR – The Royal Malaysia Police is waiting for the Home Affairs Ministry to set policies and guidelines regarding the authorisation of burning activities as well as the sale of fireworks and firecrackers.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani said police will adhere to whatever guidelines and policies set by the ministry in order to ensure public safety.
“I recently heard about it and am awaiting the ministry’s policy following the matter’s implementation,” he said at the hiking event involving the “Hiking Polis Diraja Malaysia Bersama Komuniti Peringkat Polis Kontinjen Kuala Lumpur” event at Bukit Kiara Federal Park, here today.
Yesterday, media reported that the burning and selling of fireworks and firecrackers in the country will soon be allowed, subject to new regulations and guidelines.
Local Government Development Minister Nga Kor Ming reportedly said that the cabinet had agreed on the matter two days ago as a measure to increase the country’s revenue and that the government will control its sales activities.
Meanwhile, regarding the event which involved about 200 participants comprising police personnel as well as the Bukit Kiara community and representatives of surrounding residents, Acryl Sani said it was their initiative to strengthen relations with the public.
On the incident of a woman not being allowed to enter a police station because her clothes were deemed inappropriate, he said the public should abide by the dress code but authorities must also be flexible in cases of emergency.
The chief secretary to the government, he said, had given instructions regarding government office dress codes, but the head of each department or agency has the discretion to determine its implementation.
