KUALA LUMPUR – Traffic police will continue to check motorists’ road tax and driver’s licences on the myJPJ mobile application.

“The police’s traffic enforcement and investigation department (JSPT) welcomes the digital initiative introduced by the Transport Ministry and the Road Transport Department (RTD).

“In line with the initiative, private vehicle individuals will only have to show their motor vehicle licence or driver’s licence on the app, without the need to show physical documents,” JSPT said in a Facebook post today.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke, however, said in a set of frequently asked questions (FAQ) that downloading the app is not mandatory, and that drivers who cannot produce the digitised road tax or licence will not be summoned as long as payment for renewal has been made.

Loke in his FAQ said the app was not mandatory and was just one option for motorists to show proof of their road tax and driver’s licence renewals.

Motorists can also obtain digital displays of these documents from the RTD web portal at https://public.jpj.gov.my/.

Motorists will not be summoned for failing to show the digital version, Loke said, adding that enforcement officers will be able to verify details on the system using special devices.

Loke also said a printed copy of the digital road tax and driver’s licence can be kept in the car.

The move to go digital – where the physical display of the road tax will no longer be enforced – will be implemented in stages, first involving private vehicles and motorcycles owned by Malaysians.

The app can be downloaded from App Store, Play Store, Huawei App Gallery and the RTD portal. – The Vibes, February 11, 2023
