KUALA LUMPUR – Political leaders and activists in Terengganu will not be allowed to use mosques and surau to hold political activities or lectures.

The Terengganu Islamic and Malay Customs Council (Maidam) issued the prohibition through a press statement yesterday.

Maidam governor Datuk Shaikh Harun Shaikh Ismail said the decision was made after obtaining Terengganu Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin’s assent.

Shaikh explained that Sultan Mizan expressed disappointment with the actions of politicians who have given lectures, speeches and religious lessons at mosques without permission from Maidam.

“Lawmakers at the state or federal level along with political activists are not allowed to give speeches, lectures or religious lessons in mosques and surau in Terengganu.

“Besides that, they are not allowed to perform as khatibs or Friday prayer imams in the state,” Shaikh was reported saying by Sinar Harian.

He reminded me that mosques are an important religious institution for Muslims and a symbol of unity for their faith.

Thus, Shaikh said mosques and surau that function properly would result in a positive impact on the Muslim community.

“Mosques and surau can’t be misused to cause worry and misunderstanding among the people.

“This includes using mosques for activities that contain political elements,” he added.

Shaikh also mentioned that mosque chairmen and committee members must ensure all speakers and imams have the proper qualifications and approvals by Maidam.

He also informed that religious programmes sponsored by government agencies, statutory bodies and government-linked companies and non-government organisations must ensure that the individuals invited have the proper credentials from Maidam.

“Terengganu Religious Affairs Department (JHEAT) via the Shariah Enforcement Department has been tasked with monitoring to ensure all guidelines issues are followed.

“Sultan Mizan also urges all individuals to respect and follow the guidelines and rules set by Maidam and JHEAT,” he said. – The Vibes, March 3, 2023
