KUALA LUMPUR – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has dismissed alleged threats by Perikatan Nasional (PN) against the government as political rhetoric, expressing confidence that his government will serve a full term.

“It is nothing more than political rhetoric,” he was quoted as saying by the New Straits Times in Putrajaya today.

He stressed that, regardless of what PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang had said, the unity government, comprising several parties including former foes, would survive until the next election.

Anwar, who said this in a speech at a Foreign Ministry event with Malaysia’s diplomats in Putrajaya, was commenting on Hadi’s remarks at Parliament yesterday – the PN deputy chairman said it was the opposition’s “right” to topple or launch a coup against the government.

Last week, Hadi also said in the Dewan Rakyat that the opposition should not be blamed if the government collapses again in a similar fashion to the disintegration of the Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad-led Pakatan Harapan government in 2020.

Jelutong MP RSN Rayer today said in the Dewan Rakyat that Hadi ought to face criminal action under Penal Code provisions for engaging in activities that are detrimental to parliamentary democracy.

Rayer, who urged the Home Ministry to take action against Hadi, sparked uproar from opposition MPs with his suggestion. – The Vibes, March 7, 2023
