KUALA LUMPUR – Opposition MPs will file a motion against Deputy Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister Willie Mongin for showing an obscene sign during a Parliament sitting here last week.

Khoo Poay Tiong (PH- Kota Melaka) said Mongin, who is Puncak Borneo MP, has to be referred to the Committee of Privileges for his uncouth behaviour during proceedings in the August house.

He said he had collected the signatures of 23 MPs who had witnessed the gesture to support his motion, adding that among MPs who supported him were Simpang Renggam MP Maszlee Malik, Bakri MP Yeo Bee Yin, Batu Kawan MP Kasthuriraani Patto and Ulu Langat MP Hasanuddin Mohd Yunus.

“The speaker said he did not see Mongin’s action, but the Committee of Privileges will mete out some sort of disciplinary action if such an incident did occur in the August house.

“From what I heard, the speaker had issued a show cause letter to Mongin, and I hope that he will regret and apologise for his action,” said Khoo.

Last week, Khoo had a meeting with Speaker Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun on the matter.

Azhar had previously said that he would not take any action as he could not confirm if Mongin had indeed made the obscene gesture.

He said he had watched videos of Mongin numerous times but could not make anything of it.

Opposition MPs expressed their unhappiness and said Mongin’s action was unethical and uncalled for as Parliament proceedings are watched by children, students and people at large, and it should not recur in future. – The Vibes, December 7, 2020
