JOHOR BARU – The seat negotiations for the upcoming state elections in six states is a test to see the extent of the unity government’s spirit of cooperation, MCA president Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong said.

His party has yet to receive any information about negotiations, including among Barisan Nasional (BN) component parties, as well as inter- or intra-parties.

“I think we have to wait and look at the new political scenario, how the unity government’s spirit will be translated, in whatever form.

“Not everyone will get all (seats), there might be some who won’t get all (seats), maybe a part (of seats), so how it will translate in the concept of togetherness… this is a test to see the extent of the unity government concept,” he told reporters after a breaking fast event with the media at Hotel Trove here last night.

Wee added that negotiations over demands, needs and expectations of seats are needed as the unity government is a grand coalition that requires detailed discussions.

“So, I feel discussions between BN and Pakatan Harapan (PH) should be finalised among the big coalitions,” Wee said.

As a party that supports the unity government, he is ready for discussions and feels the suitable time for it would be after Aidilfitri.

He was commenting on PH secretary-general Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail’s statement yesterday that parties that won seats in the 14th general election would contest them again in the upcoming state elections, and that the decision was reached through recent first-round discussions over seats for PH and BN. – Bernama, April 10, 2023
