BUTTERWORTH – Several roads in and around the Sree Maha Mariamman Temple in Tokong Lane are expected to experience traffic congestion starting from tomorrow until Saturday due to a religious festival that includes a chariot procession.
Seberang Prai Utara district police chief Mohd Asri Shafie said the chariot procession would pass through a number of roads in and around Butterworth on the said days and locations.
“Refreshment stalls (thaneer panthal) and other stalls offering food, sweets, and local delicacies as well as ornamental shops will be set up along the roadsides during the period. The roads will experience extra traffic congestion during the chariot procession,” he said in a statement today.
Asri said starting tomorrow from 5 pm to 12 midnight, roads that will be affected by traffic congestion are Jalan Mengkuang, Jalan Kg Paya, Jalan Raja Uda, and Jalan Bagan Ajam.
On Thursday, from midnight to 2.30am, roads that will be affected by traffic congestion are Jalan Thambi Kecil, Jalan Kg Gajah, and Jalan Jetty Lama.
Asri said on Friday, from 5pm to midnight, the chariot procession will pass through Jalan Jetty Lama, Jalan Telaga Air, Jalan Permatang Pauh, Jalan Bagan Lalang, Jalan Mak Mandin 5, and Jalan P. Patto.
On Saturday, starting from midnight till 9am, the roads that will be affected are Jalan Telaga Air, Jalan Kg Benggali, Jalan Heng Choon Thiam, and Jalan New Ferry.
“Motorists and other road users are advised to plan their journey and use alternative routes to reach their destinations. However, police will be stationed to control traffic flow throughout the said period,” he said.
Police believe more than 5,000 Hindu devotees will be attending the religious festival. – Bernama, June 6, 2023
