AN armed robber escaped empty-handed after his attempt to steal cash from a security van outside a bank in Bandar Bukit Tinggi, Selangor, failed due to the quick actions of a security guard on duty.
The incident occurred between 5.30pm and 6pm on Monday while cash was being transferred from a bank to the security vehicle.
Selangor police chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar said the security guard was approached by a man wearing a jacket and a full-face helmet who pointed what was believed to be a revolver at him.
"The security guard on duty, after realising the presence of the suspect, acted quickly by placing the bag containing money from the commercial bank into the security van before closing the vehicle's door.
"As a result, the suspect failed to obtain any cash, which was estimated to be RM82,000," he told a press conference at the Selangor Police Contingent Headquarters today.
However, Shazeli said the suspect managed to seize a firearm belonging to the security guard before fleeing the scene on a motorcycle.
He said police were conducting efforts to track down the suspect and believed the individual acted alone during the incident.
"So far, investigations indicate that the suspect acted alone, and police are gathering closed-circuit television (CCTV) recordings from the bank, nearby premises and vehicle dashboard cameras.
"Alhamdulillah, police have obtained recordings that can assist investigations under Sections 392 and 397 of the Penal Code.
"The Selangor Police Contingent appeals to members of the public with any information that could assist the investigation to come forward and contact the investigating officer or any nearby police station," he said.
Asked whether roadblocks had been set up to track down the suspect, Shazeli said such measures were part of standard operating procedures for serious and high-profile cases.
He added that police would implement roadblocks at locations deemed useful in the search for the suspect, depending on operational requirements.
