PUTRAJAYA – No candidates have won uncontested in the upcoming six state elections as well as the Kuala Terengganu parliamentary by-election.

Election Commission (EC) chairman Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Salleh said it received a total of 573 nomination papers today, with only one rejected.

The sole nomination that was rejected was an independent candidate who wanted to contest in the Kota Lama state seat in Kelantan.

A total of 245 state seats will be contested – 36 in Kedah, 45 in Kelantan, 32 in Terengganu, 40 in Penang, 56 in Selangor and 36 in Negri Sembilan.

Nomination papers were filed earlier today at all the constituencies in the six states with August 12 fixed as polling day and August 8 as early voting day.

With 572 candidates contesting, only 71 are women.

According to the EC, the oldest candidate is 80-year-old Ravinder Singh from Parti Rakyat Malaysia vying for the Pantai Jerejak seat in Penang.

The youngest candidate meanwhile is 23-year-old Melanie Ting who is contesting in Bukit Antarabangsa, Selangor under Muda.

A majority of 180 state seats will see a straight fight.

Only one seat is set to witness a five-cornered fight. Fifty seats will see a three-cornered fight and only 13 seats are four-cornered.

The five-cornered fight is in Lunas, Kedah where the incumbent is Azman Nasruddin. Azman was formerly a PKR man but left to join Perikatan Nasional.

Those vying for the seat which falls under the Padang Serai parliamentary constituency are Cikgu Shamsul from Pakatan Harapan, Khairul Anuar Ramli from PN, and three independents: Rajendran Nadarajan, Pannir Selvam Suppiah, and Ari.

All candidates have until 11.59pm on August 11 to campaign with polling day set for August 12. – The Vibes, July 29, 2023
