KUALA LUMPUR – PAS has terminated the memberships of its Langkawi deputy chief Mazlan Ahmad and Langkawi deputy youth chief Safwan Hanif Shafie who are contesting as independents in the upcoming Kedah election.

PAS secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan said that based on recent reports received by his office, a total of eight individuals were going against the party’s regulations.

Mazlan and Safwan are in the running for the Kuah and Ayer Hangat state seats respectively.

“They have gone against party regulations by contesting as independents, becoming representatives, proposers and seconders to the candidates.

“All steps have been taken by the state leadership to persuade and stop these individuals but were unsuccessful,” Takiyuddin said.

“As stated by PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang on July 26, as well as in a notice from the secretary-general on July 27 and 30, any member who runs as an independent candidate or acts in a manner that goes against party regulations will face action, including possible termination,” he said in a statement.

Takiyuddin said his office had also received a letter from the two candidates yesterday, with one of them resigning from all his party positions.

“The other has also stated that he is leaving the party, while three more members who acted as proposers and seconders and representatives to the candidates have done the same,” he said.

Takiyuddin said all those concerned, except those who have left the party, are given the option to withdraw from contesting and ask their supporters to support the Perikatan Nasional candidate in both constituencies.

“If this is done, it can mitigate any disciplinary action to be taken against them,” he said. – The Vibes, August 1, 2023
