Rejecting Western pressure to condemn “militant” nationalist movement Hamas, Anwar emphasised the historical relationship between Malaysia and Hamas and the legitimate electoral mandate the group received in Gaza.
His remarks stress a fundamental principle: the right of the people to self-determination.
Regardless of the political stance on Hamas, the underlying message was clear: Malaysia recognises and respects the choice of the Gazan people.
Beyond mere rhetoric, Anwar has actively called for pragmatic measures to alleviate the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the region.
Despite criticisms at home, he has been keen to clarify that sending troops overseas is not a matter of mere impulse.
Instead, it requires the collective decision of regional allies, taking into consideration logistical and strategic constraints.
Further establishing Malaysia’s humanitarian stance, Anwar has also urged the establishment of a humanitarian corridor in Rafah and a cessation of bombardment.
The emphasis on creating safe channels for aid signifies Malaysia’s genuine intent to support distressed civilians caught in the crossfire.
His commitment to addressing Israel’s occupation of Palestine is evident through his upcoming visit to Saudi Arabia.
During the Asean and Gulf Cooperation Council Summit, he plans to discuss the need for meetings with other world leaders to address this crisis. This proactive approach highlights Malaysia’s dedication to finding a solution.
Anwar’s call for Israel to abandon its “politics of dispossession” also provides a crucial insight into his broader vision for the region: a peaceful coexistence based on justice, respect, and acknowledgment of the rights of the Palestinian people.

The government is also looking into raising a total of RM100 million for the Palestinians.
This aid is crucial, especially given the dire situation in Gaza, where access to basic necessities like food and medical supplies has become increasingly challenging, largely due to Israel’s blockade.
Malaysia’s position is clear in that it stands against actions that harm innocent civilians, and the government is determined to expedite humanitarian aid to prevent a worsening humanitarian crisis.
On the ground, rallies in Kuala Lumpur often see thousands expressing solidarity with Palestinians, reflecting the collective sentiment of the Malaysian population.
This sentiment is in tandem with the government’s foreign policy, with Malaysia being a vocal supporter of Palestinian rights and maintaining no diplomatic ties with Israel.
