PETALING JAYA – It is inaccurate to say a démarche delivered by the United States embassy to Malaysia was a threat, said a Perikatan Nasional MP.

Wan Ahmad Fayshal Wan Ahmad Kamal (Machang-PN) said the notice merely conveyed an official diplomatic stance and is a normal practice in diplomacy.

“The term démarche is actually a French term that refers to an official diplomatic stance of a government made toward another country.

“It is not a threat, but rather an inquiry by the US on our official stand about Palestine.

“This is a common practice in diplomacy,” he said.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had earlier revealed in the Dewan Rakyat that Malaysia had received three démarche notes from the US embassy for the country’s firm stance against designating Hamas as a terrorist group.

Anwar said the notes were received via the Foreign Ministry on October 13, 18 and 30.

Wan Fayhsal said the term “threat” is very serious.

“I have tried to put forward a motion condemning Israel’s war crimes, but it was rejected.

“The government MPs should now bring that motion.” – The Vibes, October 31, 2023
