MALAYSIAN tenpin bowling lost a legendary figure as Datuk Dr. P. S. Nathan, the former president of the Malaysian Tenpin Bowling Congress (MTBC), died on Sunday.

He was 90.

Nathan, who was the longest-serving president of any national sports association in Malaysia, leaves behind an extraordinary legacy in the world of bowling.

MTBC secretary-general Maradona Chok confirmed the news.

Nathan founded the MTBC in 1974 and led the organisation for nearly five decades.

His unwavering dedication and leadership were instrumental in shaping Malaysia's success in tenpin bowling on the international stage.

A former Asian Games gold medallist bowler and consultant dermatologist by profession, Nathan elevated Malaysian bowling to reach world class standards.

He was instrumental in getting bowling included in the 1998 KL Commonwealth Games, the only time the sport has been contested in the history of the Games.

"He was a remarkable leader, mentor, and a guiding force in the bowling community. His visionary leadership not only elevated Malaysian bowling to a world-class standard but also inspired countless individuals who had the privilege of learning from him.

"His contributions to the sport, both locally and globally, are immeasurable, and his loss is a profound one for the entire bowling fraternity.

"Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.

"His legacy will forever remain in the hearts of those he touched and in the continued success of Malaysian bowling,” MTBC said in a statement it posted on its Facebook page. - September 23, 2024
