FORMER Malaysian Basketball Association (Maba) secretary-general Datuk Yeoh Choo Hock, who contributed significantly to the sport over three decades passed away peacefully at his home in Putra Heights today.

He was 80 years old.

In a statement, MABA President Datuk Seri Lee Tian Hock said Yeoh was a towering figure in the world of basketball and his death is a tremendous loss not only to the Malaysian basketball community but also to the global sporting world.

"For over three decades, Yeoh was the heartbeat of Malaysian basketball. His journey began as a dedicated player and evolved into a remarkable career in basketball administration.

"His leadership extended to the international stage, where he served as a FIBA Commissioner at four Olympic Games and numerous FIBA World Championships," said Lee.

He said Yeoh was a driving force behind Malaysia’s national team, guiding them to a historic gold medal at the 1989 SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur, and organising significant international tournaments, such as the Women's Basketball World Championship in Malaysia.

"The Malaysia Basketball Association extends its deepest condolences to Yeoh’s family, friends, and all who were touched by his generosity and passion for the game. 

"His impact on Malaysian and international basketball is immeasurable, and his memory will forever be cherished in the annals of sports history," added Lee. - November 15, 2024
