THE Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) has confirmed that Datuk Mohd Joehari Mohd Ayub has officially stepped down as FAM President after submitting his resignation letter recently.

Mohd Joehari's resignation comes just six months after he was appointed as the eighth FAM president at the congress to elect a new leadership line-up, on February 15.

Joehari reportedly submitted his resignation letter last Friday.

The surprise decision also saw the number one FAM seat now vacant with a new presidential election to be held at next year's congress.

The FAM Executive Committee meeting today decided that Deputy President, Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mahadi, would be given the responsibility of acting president pending the election of a new president.

"According to Article 42 Paragraph 7 of the FAM Statute, if the position of President becomes vacant, the longest serving Deputy President will replace him until the next Congress, which is next year.

"The Congress shall elect a new president for the remainder of the term of office," FAM said in a statement today.

KJ, Farhash in the running?

Meanwhile three names have surfaced as potential successors to Mohd Joehari.

Among the leading candidates is Mohd Yusoff Mahadi, who has held the post of FAM Deputy President since 2017 and currently chairs the Amateur Football League (AFL).

Another strong contender is former Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin Abu Bakar, who was FAM Deputy President from 2007 to 2010 and reportedly has close ties with the Regent of Johor, Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, which could play to his advantage.

Another named reportedly mentioned is businessman Datuk Seri Farhash Wafa Salvador Rizal Mubarak, who is believed to have the financial means to strengthen FAM's resources if appointed. - August 27, 2025
