TOKYO – Malaysian men’s doubles shuttlers Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik today defeated world No. 1 Marcus Fernaldi Gideon-Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo of Indonesia in straight sets at the Musashino Forest Sports Plaza to book a spot in the semi-finals of the Tokyo Olympics today.

Aaron-Wooi Yik crushed the Indonesian pair 21-14, 21-17 in 50 minutes to keep Malaysia’s medal chase alive.

“We had a game plan and followed it through, and it worked. We came into this match as the underdog, and we did not have any pressure,” said Aaron in a television interview from Tokyo.

“We are ready for the next match regardless of who we will meet. We will do our best.”

The Malaysian pair will either meet China’s Liu Yuchen-Li Junhui or Anders Skaarup Rasmussen-Kim Astrup of Denmark in the semi-finals.

On Tuesday night, the world No. 9 trounced Canada’s Jason Ho-Shue-Nyl Yakura 21-15, 21-13 to qualify for the last eight.

Aaron-Wooi Yik made their Olympic debut by beating South Korea’s Choi Sol-gyu-Seo Seung-jae 22-24, 15-21 last Saturday. – The Vibes, July 29, 2021
