KUALA LUMPUR – Great news for Malaysian badminton as the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) have secured a whopping RM45 million sponsorship after the national sports body inked a three-year deal with Petronas today.

This is the biggest deal for BAM since its establishment, signalling a great start for 2022.

According to a source in the badminton fraternity, both parties have been negotiating for the last few months before agreeing to a RM15 million-a-year deal for three years.

“With this deal in and Yonex onboard, BAM will not have any funding issues to worry about.

Last year April, Yonex and BAM agreed to a RM55 million deal for five years after the association ended its long-time relationship with Victor – a Taiwanese based badminton manufacturer.

“After all that BAM had gone through this year with the Lee Zii Jia and Goh Jin Wei issue, this is a good comeback by the association.

“The institution can now focus on developing our players and the sport,” the source told The Vibes.

The source added that BAM should now focus on a group of players instead of an individual because it normally backfires when all the golden eggs are placed in one basket.

“The national body should also send their young players to as many tournaments to give them more exposure playing at the international stage. The more they play, the better they become.

The deal is expected to further boost the performance and development of Malaysia’s badminton. BAM players will also be donning new shirts with Petronas colours following the agreement.

This augurs well with BAM’s latest achievement after being awarded a five-star rating by the Sports Commissioner’s Office (PJS) earlier this week.

The ratings was based on the overall achievements of the association’s athletes and officials as well as its performance from a managerial and financial standpoint.

“There is good governance in BAM and the award by the PJS is proof of how professional the national body is being run. – The Vibes, March 4, 2022
