KUALA LUMPUR – World number 46 shuttler Ng Tze Yong has been forced to sit out the German Open due to a minor injury.

Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) singles coaching director Wong Choong Hann says Tze Yong has been sidelined to afford him ample time to recover.

“We will shift our focus on preparing him for the Swiss Open,” he said.

The Malaysian shuttler was supposed to face Indonesia’s Jonatan Christie in the first round of the German Open today.

Tze Yong delivered the winning point for the men’s squad at the Badminton Asia Team Championships (BATC) last month when he defeated Indonesia’s Ikhsan Leonardo Imanuel Rumbay 21-14, 21-15 in 47 minutes.

This will be the second tournament Tze Yong missed this year following the 21-year-old Johorian’s withdrawal from the Syed Modi International after contracting Covid-19.

However, the player made a stunning return to form with his winning performance at BATC.

Meanwhile, men’s doubles pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik were also forced to pull out of the German Open after Wooi Yik tested positive for Covid-19.

As the doubles ace is currently observing self-isolation, BAM said in a statement that his participation in the forthcoming All-England tournament will be decided soon.

The 2022 All England Open is set to take place in Birmingham from March 16-20.

Meanwhile, world number seven Lee Zii Jia will face Mark Caljouw of the Netherlands tomorrow in his first round of the German Open. – The Vibes, March 8, 2022
