KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysia Championship Series (MCS) returns this year with four rounds taking place at the Sepang International Circuit (SIC).

In a statement, SIC announced the provisional calendar for the 2022 season with the opener Round 1 scheduled for May 20-22, Round 2 from June 17-19, Round 3 on July 22-24 and the season finale scheduled on September 16-18.

The championship will consist of four classes: Touring Production (T Production) for modified cars above 2000cc, Malaysia Touring Car (M Production) for cars with 1600cc and below modified class, Stock Production 1 (SP1) cars above 2000cc and Stock Production 2 (SP2) cars that are below 1600cc.

Each round has two one-hour endurance races with the final round consisting of a 300km endurance race of 54 laps around the 5,543m track.

SIC chief executive officer Azhan Shafriman Hanif said: “We are excited to announce the return of MCS 2022 season to SIC.

“With the government having announced the full reopening of Malaysia’s international borders effective April 1, 2022, we look forward to welcoming back international participants for more excitement on the grid,” he said.

He also thanked the National Security Council, The Health Ministry, Youth and Sports Ministry and the Motorsports Association of Malaysia for their endless effort and support of the Malaysian sports and events industry.

MCS is a national racing series that is promoted and organised by SIC as an initiative to promote and develop four-wheel racing sports in Malaysia.

The series originated from the old Malaysian Super Series championship, which was introduced in 2002.

It was introduced three years after Formula One first hit the asphalt of SIC as the management took advantage of the renewed interest in motorsports amongst Malaysians.

The series was then rebranded in 2015 as MCS to further inject interest and excitement into the series.

With the championship open to competitors outside Malaysia, both MCS and the Malaysia Superbike Championship are key motorsports events in the region. – The Vibes, April 14, 2022
