THE Sepang International Circuit (SIC) will be completely closed starting September 7 for renovation and improvement work in preparation for the Formula 1 (F1) Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix.
Youth and Sports Minister Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari said the work not only involves the race track, but also other facilities.
He said the facilities include spectator seating, toilets and all related elements to ensure Malaysia's image is at its best on the world stage.
"The work is currently underway, and on September 7, 2026, SIC will be completely closed,” he said.
Commenting on the F1 preparations, he said three committees had been established, namely the main committee, technical committee and sub-committee, which includes eight to nine branches to ensure that preparations run smoothly.
He said the technical committee also holds meetings every Tuesday before the results of the discussions are presented in the Cabinet meeting.
“So far, we have signed an agreement between SIC and Bahrain International Circuit, including matters related to ticket sales, parking and several other aspects in general.
“The protocol, international, immigration and all related agencies have also coordinated their work so that the organising process is smoother,” he said.
Mohammed Taufiq said his party also wants to ensure that organising the F1 will have a positive economic spillover effect on Malaysians throughout the three-day event, starting from October 2 to 4.
He said it is also proposed that the public be allowed to enter the SIC a day before the race to experience the atmosphere at the circuit, while the launch of F1 volunteers is expected to be held next week. – August 25, 2026
