KUALA LUMPUR – Melaka dominated the opening day of the wushu competition at the 20th Malaysia Games (Sukma) by bagging five of the seven gold medals on offer today, with Johor clinching the other two.

The 18-year-old Bryan, who clinched bronze in the previous edition, told reporters that he did not expect to win this time as his opponents were more superior and experienced.

“I hope this victory will help me get a national call-up to the SEA Games in Cambodia next May,” he said.

Melaka added a second wushu gold through Vietnam SEA Games bronze medallist Sydney Chin Sy Xuan (9.6430 pts) in women’s taijijian, with silver and bronze going to Selangor’s Mandy Cebelle Chen (9.6200 pts) and Sarawak’s Yong Arifah Khairul Kok (9.5830 pts) respectively.

Melaka also dominated the women’s nanquan event, with Tan Pei Ler (9.5100 pts) finishing atop the podium ahead of Johor’s Lee Huan (9.5060 pts) and Federal Territories’ Lydia Lau Pei Yi (9.4600 pts).

Tammy Tan Hui Ling (9.6330 pts) handed Melaka gold number four in women’s jianshu, which saw Sarawak’s Stephanie Ngu Chai Ern (9.6060 pts) and Negri Sembilan’s Pang Pui Yee (9.5430 pts) settling for silver and bronze respectively.

Melaka’s fifth gold came courtesy of Ang Qi Yue (9.6500 pts) in men’s jianshu, with Johor’s Hew Wei Peng (9.6300 pts) and Penang’s Lim Jue Xin (9.6200 pts) taking silver and bronze respectively.
