KUALA LUMPUR – The Federal Territories and Penang charged on with their mission to end the wait for a historic first gold medal in men’s football at the 20th Malaysia Games (Sukma) after confirming their slots in the semi-finals today.

In the quarter-finals held at Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Shah Alam Stadium, the Federal Territories squeezed past Johor through a penalty shoot-out 5-4 after both teams were tied 1-1 after extra time.

Goalkeeper Muhammad Azim Al Amin Kamaruddin emerged hero as he saved four Johor penalty kicks before he himself blasted home the winning kick to put the team one step closer to grabbing a historic first football gold in Sukma.

In the semi-finals, Federal Territories will face Terengganu, who tamed Perlis 3-0 in another quarter-final match at UKM Stadium in Bangi.

Meanwhile, Penang, who have also never savoured Sukma gold, edged Kelantan 5-4 through a penalty shootout after the match ended 2-2 at Uniten Stadium in Kajang,

Awaiting Penang in the semi-finals are Selangor, with the 1988 and 1998 gold winners also progressing through a penalty shootout, beating Pahang 7-6 (0-0 after extra time) at UM Stadium.

Both semi-final matches are scheduled for tomorrow. – Bernama, September 20, 2022
