KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia’s top tower runner Soh Wai Ching has set a new national record with a time of 7:18m after participating in the Top Tower Run Komtar Penang on January 8.

In a statement today, Wai Ching said that despite only having two weeks of training for this competition, he was confident of breaking the previous course record time of 7:39m set in 2019.

“I know that my performance now is way better than it was in 2019, therefore breaking the record is not a problem for me,” he said.

He noted that his goal was to beat the previous course record time of 7:39m by paring it down to 7:30m.

“I crossed the finish line and quickly pressed my watch, then collapsed right after that. I have a look at the watch, and it showed a time of 7:23m.

“After knowing the official results and doing a double check on my watch, I found out that I split the time instead of stopping the time, so I actually did a much faster time than 7:23m.

“I found out that my official time was 7:18.88m and that I broke my previous course record by 21 seconds,” said Wai Ching.

Wai Ching said that during the competition, he started to feel tired when he reached the 45th floor, but he kept pushing and tried his best to maintain the pace.

“I knew that at the 60th floor, the staircase would change from a long flight of stairs of 20 steps to a different pattern.

“I am expecting better, easier stairs for me once I get there and use the metal rail to pull myself upwards and I have to finish strong,” said Wai Ching.

Wan Ching said that he was very pleased with his performance and happy to win it, and that he also achieved his goal.

He added that his next competition will be at the Media One Hotel in Dubai, UAE.

“My target for this year will be taking down every course record of the competitions that I will be taking part in.

“And also aiming to achieve 2 Guinness World Records in 2023,” he said. – The Vibes, January 10, 2023
