KUALA LUMPUR – Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh said the ministry is not shocked by incidents of sexual harassment taking place within the sporting industry.
The Segambut MP said this when asked if the ministry would release data collected by Institute for Youth Research Malaysia on abuse and harassment involving athletes.
“If you want to look at surveys on sexual harassment, the Women, Family, and Community Development Ministry has done that before.
“We have released those findings online, so it is nothing new,” she said during an appreciation event for Football Association of Malaysia president Datuk Hamidin Mohd Amin.
Yeoh added that the data on sexual harassment had already been read out during the tabling of the Anti-Sexual Harassment Bill 2021, which was passed last year.
“It is not new, we are not taken by surprise on what is happening,” she added.
Previously, former Youth and Sports Ministry secretary-general Datuk Jana Santhiran Muniayan revealed that the data recorded on abuse and harassment involving athletes is “scary”.
When Yeoh had just been appointed minister, she said that the Safe Sport Act will be the new administration’s top priority, as she was also instrumental in the Anti-Sexual Harassment Bill’s enactment. – The Vibes, February 7, 2023
