BANGKOK – Thailand will maintain its state of emergency over Covid-19 until the middle of January next year, in an effort to keep infections under control during the New Year holidays.

Government spokesman Anucha Burapachaisri said the cabinet today approved a 45-day extension of the state of emergency from December 1 to January 15 – its eighth extension proposed by the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA).

The current state of emergency will end on November 30.

“The extension is longer than the previous 30-day extension as it covers the New Year holidays.

“It is to keep the Covid-19 pandemic under control,” he told a press conference at the Government House.

The Emergency Decree to curb the spread of Covid-19 has been in place since March 26.
